Planning Grant for Full-Scale Teaching and Learning Technology Grant Proposal
Overview:
This
grant would provide the resources to gather a group of folks serious about
meeting for a few days to design and prepare a large ACA Technology grant
proposal for a project that would provide training and curriculum development
utilizing GIS technology.
Rationale:
Many
science programs are expanding their program to include GIS technology in
their teaching programs. This type of training has been discussed for two
years when Scientists have gathered at the Technology Summit and has been
proposed as one topic that would apply to numerous disciplines and be important
enough to involve numerous ACA campuses. There is enough interest in this
type of training, that a large project, the size of the full scale ACA Teaching
and Learning Technology Grant would be required. The planning grant would
provide the project leaders the chance to plan a project that would involve
most ACA campuses and curriculum that would span across different disciplines.
Of particular interest, is the opportunity to expand the training that the
ACA faculty have had at Appalachian Laboratories and investigate the joint
involvement of the staff from that Maryland laboratory.
Operational Plan:
Award of the Planning Grant-Late September
Note: Release of funds is dependent upon sufficient
participant commitments and a satisfactory preliminary report from participants
submitted at the Technololgy Summit in October.
Stage One - Individuals will be selected from those indicating an interest in leading this training, those involved in the Appalachian Laboratories, interested in expanding their Watershed Anaylsis work, and those responding to a call for participants as leaders of this project. Eight participants will be selected to serve as Project leaders for this planning grant.
Stage Two - Project leaders will meet at the Technology Summit in October and decide upon the major components of the project through contact with ACA scientists at the conference. This leadership team submits a preliminary report to the ACA that must be approved before funds are released for the project.
Stage Three - Project leaders meet for a weekend at a central location to make plans for a four day planning and grant writing session. Assignments for grant preparation will be made and consultant contracts can be prepared. At the conclusion of the weekend, a strategic plan for the planning session is submitted to the ACA.
Stage Four - Project leaders and those invited to assist in the grant preparation meet for a four day session to prepare a full scale grant for the ACA Mellon II Teaching and Technology Grant Program. The last day of the session, the ACA director of these grant proposals will be asked to attend to refine this grant proposal for its submission to the ACA.
Stage Five - A team of two people are selected to carry the grant through the ACA process of submission.
Stage Six - If the proposal is funded, these two stage five leaders work with the Science Coordinator and the ACA Project Director to transition into the full scale grant.
Planning session Outcomes-
1. A grant proposal presented to the ACA at the conclusion of the four day work session.
2. A web posting of the grant to provide sharing among the ACA faculty in the recruitment of their participation in the grant if awarded. [This site is posted and available to project leaders until a time when the grant may be approved and rapid calls for involvement can be available to the ACA Science Group.]
3. An evaluation of the activities and the efficiency of this strategy for grant preparation.
Budget Components: The amount is to be discussed with the ACA Teaching and Learning Director and the components of funding from external sources established.
