Science Group -

Current Proposals the are to be considered at the November 4th, 2004 Pre-Summit Science Group Conference:

Mini - Grants and Efforts to Continue the Science Group

Reference earlier work that started the first Science Group Project work....

We are hoping that our Fall Workshops will serve the role of encouraging us to start new collaborative projects. We hope that the initiation of such ideas at the fall workshop will lead to grants that can support our emerging efforts. Below are the ideas presented at the last, Fall 2000 Workshop.

These workshops are held the day just before the Appalachian College Association (ACA)Summit on Technology and Teaching, so it provides a great time for you to combine your travel expenses and also link with others interested in ideas that you would like to launch.

If you have ideas for the ACA Science Group Workshops, please drop me a note: Mark Lassiter, mlassiter@montreat.edu

ACA Teaching and Learning Technology Grant Proposals

Introductory note....Proposals are listed below, please scroll down after reading the introductory note:

I have tried to propose three projects that I think would include the interests that I have heard voiced as central needs at the last two Technology Summits for Scientists in the ACA. These by no means include all the ideas that we have shared, but I thought these might serve as a starting place for some folks. Groups could compile a proposal for a Planning Grant to meet together after the Workshop and make plans for a project that would combine funds for meeting together and training from the ACA and monies from outside sources for other components.

I hope that those of you already doing collaborative projects will pursue extended funding At least if some of us got involved in these projects, it gets us started. If we do not get enough interest in these projects, we could cancel some and get ideas to plan others.

Below I have tried to describe what I think might work. My hope would be that we could get folks that were interested in these projects to respond and have a decision on funding by the Technology Summit, where those participating could make initial plans for launching their efforts while we are together at the summit.

If you are interested in participating in any of these projects, let me know!!

If you are interested in presenting at the workshop, the work of your group on a project that we might pursue, also let me know so that we can schedule some presentations for the workshop!

Thanks, Mark Lassiter

Take a look and see if you would be interested in participating in the following Mellon Teaching and Technology Projects:

1. GIS and its use in Science Curriculum -Planning Grant for a Full-Scale Technology Grant Proposal

[This grant would provide the resources to gather a group of folks serious about meeting for a few days to design and prepare a large ACA Technology grant proposal for a project that would provide training and curriculum development utilizing GIS.]

2. Pittcon Resources - Web Resource Development Grant for Chemists / Biologists

[This grant would enable a group of Chemists / Biologists to attend the Pittcon 2000 and 2001 conferences and work while there to compile a resource site for the virtual center. This site would include the numerous resources provided by this conference and this web site would be prepared during a pre-conference and post-conference workshop for us at Pittcon to compile the resources of interest to Chemists / Biologists. The web site will enable others to follow and access the resources investigated and evaluated by this team attending the Pittcon 2000 and 2001 Conference.]

3. Natural History Inventory Exchange - Web Resource Development Grant for Ecologists / Biologists

[This grant provides the multimedia training that has been long requested by scientists in our gatherings. Basic graphic training and internet posting skills in this grant would enable the ACA institutions to compile and post natural history inventories to be shared in collaborative curriculum development and utilize the rich ecological diversity afforded by the location of our institutions.]
