September 1996

Taylor University continued its commitment to education, research, and service involving global stewardship issues during the academic year 1995/96. The major impact of the Pew/Global Stewardship Initiative funds has been the initiation of a collaborative (Dr. Chris Barrett, Utah State University, and REG) research project focusing on human needs in environmentalism. This project has resulted in two manuscripts; one in revision for re-submission to Environmental Ethics , the other in preparation for submission to Zygon (draft copies of both are enclosed). Pew/GSI funds also have had an impact on environmental education generally at Taylor.
The Environmental Science program at Taylor was established in 1980 and has seen steady growth since then. It is a well-established program with approximately 70 majors, and it receives substantial support from the University. I joined the program in 1994. As indicated above, the Pew/GSI funds awarded Taylor University were mainly for research. These funds, however, have had a greater impact than the two resulting manuscripts directly show. For example, participation in the meetings associated with the GSI program provided me with an exceptional introduction to Coalition-wide activities, as well as the impetus to become a more effective participant in our own program. For my own research and teaching, the most important activity was attendance at two meetings of the broader (than CCCU institutions) community of environmentalists. I think one of the most important things the environmentalists at CCCU institutions can do at this time is actively seek to broaden our base of regular communication. Pew/GSI funds have taken me a long way in this direction, and I am grateful for such an opportunity.
Global stewardship activities at Taylor for 1995/96 were in four areas: 1) courses taught; 2) extracurricular student activities; 3) professional meetings attended by faculty; 4) research, contracts, and publishing; and 5) miscellaneous activities. The following sections summarize these activities.

2. Extracurricular student activities

Most extracurricular student activities relevant to global stewardship are carried out at Taylor as part of the student environmental club, Stewards of Creation, which was formally organized during the 1995/96 academic year. Drs. Paul Rothrock and Ray Grizzle are the faculty sponsors. At this time, there are approximately 20 student members. The following is a list of the major activities of the club during the academic year.
