We are now directing you to the current Au Sable Institute Home so that
you will get the updated materials on their numerous programs and resources.
Please see Au Sable Institute's
home page for all current information. We are sorry for any inconveniences.
Purpose and Setting. Au Sable is a Christian environmental
stewardship Institute whose mission is to bring healing and wholeness to
the biosphere and the whole of Creation. It does this through academic programs
for college and university students, research projects and Fora, environmental
education for local school children, and information services for churches,
denominations and the wider world community. Supported by surrounding forests,
wetlands, lakes, and rivers, participants take courses, engage in scholarship,
gain field experience, confer, and develop practical tools for environmental
stewardship in programs that take seriously both science and theology.
Vocation, and Professional Certification. To achieve
the full vocational benefits of the Institute, students are advised to complete
an integrated program of study and experience that leads to an official
Institute Certificate. Those working for vocational certification are given
preference on course selection, fellowships, and financial aid.
Student Life. Au Sable operates as a community based upon
Christian teachings and practices. It is a community that works together
and worships together as it seeks to bring a caring keeping to the Creation.
Class periods and meals are begun with devotions, students and faculty families
participate in Sunday vesper services, and students have the opportunity
to worship regularly in churches of their choice. Recreation includes wildland
exploration, wildlife observation, canoeing, sailing, swimming and snorkeling,
tennis, volleyball, basketball, softball, hiking, cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing, and nature study.
Relation to the Home College, University or Seminary. Persons
enrolled in the Institute remain students at their home college, university
or seminary. Most enroll through accredited "Participating Colleges"
who control admission of students to Institute courses and programs, award
college credit, and collect tuition and fees. Others enroll through public
and private colleges, universities and seminaries.
Tuition and Costs. Tuition rates are those of the home
institution. Room and board is $90 per week and normally is paid to the
Participating College. Students from other than Participating Colleges may
arrange payment through a Participating College or directly to the Institute.
Textbooks and supplies are usually less than $75 per course.
Fellowships, Honors Scholarships, Grants-in-Aid, and Au Sable Steward
Awards. Each Participating College is allotted at least one Institute
Fellowship of up to $1200 and one or more Institute Grants-in-Aid of at
least $350 for qualifying students. Honors Scholarships of $500 and Au Sable
Stewardship Awards of $350 are also granted to returning students.
Facilities. Au Sable Institute is located in an aspen and
pine forest on a clear oligotrophic lake. Living accommodations are motel-type
rooms, rustic dormitories, and cabins. Dining facilities look out on surrounding
forest flora, and a lodge with fireplace, lounge, and chapel, provide for
classes, relaxation, worship, and study. An earth-and-snow-sheltered laboratory
and library support out-of-doors coursework. A recreation building provides
for indoor recreation, and trails lead to the lake shore, a nearby beaver
pond and more distant bogs, lakes and marshes.
Au Sable Institute is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 institution under the
U.S. Internal Revenue code and as such is eligible to receive tax-deductible
contributions for its operations and programs. Of its approximately $600,000
annual budget, about $300,000 comes from tuition and fees; the remainder
comes from gifts and grants. The Institute welcomes gifts from any who wish
to share in fulfillment of its mission or the conduct of specific projects
or programs. |
