The A Rocha Trust was founded in 1983 to put into practice the biblical call to care for all creation. Shortly afterwards, a field study centre and bird observatory was established in south west Portugal that has now been visited by thousands of students and others from around the world. The work of A Rocha has been welcomed by conservation organisations including Birdlife International, the United Nations, government agencies including the European Commission, and churches world-wide. Since 1994 the Trust has been working to set up and support similar projects elsewhere and in 1996 further projects began in Lebanon and France. A Rocha is Portuguese for "The Rock".

Members of the Council of Reference include Professor Sam Berry, Sir Ghillean Prance, and Revd Dr John Stott.

A Rocha believes that practical conservation projects based on careful field work are essential to preserve biological diversity. With many of their former students and volunteers still active in environmental issues and an international approach, A Rocha is making a difference in the way Christians work together to solve ecological problems.

A Rocha Trust established a field study center and bird observatory, Cruzinha, in 1986. Since then, Cruzinha has welcomed thousands of visitors from all over the world, with many students coming from within Portugal itself.
